Factor Related to Cultural Competence among Baccalaureate Nursing Students in Korea

Abstract
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the level of, and factors related to, cultural competence among nursing students in Korea.

Methods: The subjects were 162 nursing students in Seoul who have clinical experience at the level of junior and senior years. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires including socio-demographic characteristics, factors related to culture, and a cultural competence assessment tool. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, multiple regression with SPSS WIN 21.0.

Results: The total score of cultural competence was found to be 4.17¡¾0.63 (1¡­7) and cultural awareness and sensitivity was 5.24¡¾0.43 (1¡­7), cultural competence behavior was 3.28¡¾1.01 (1¡­7). Cultural competence was significantly different according to religion, frequency of foreign travel, living abroad, period of living abroad, association with foreign friends, the period of association with foreigner friends, foreign language fluency, experience of class related to transcultural nursing or cultural education were found to be significant with cultural competence. Religion and frequency of foreign travel were associated with cultural competence (R2 =13.2%).

Conclusion: The findings suggest that more experience with foreign cultures is related to higher levels of cultural competence among nursing students.
